Beyond existing electric vehicles and hybrid cars, the company plans to actively pursue various new businesses such as the development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs) to lead changes in the mobility ecosystem.
On the 28th, Hyundai Motor held the '2024 CEO Investor Day' at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, targeting investors, analysts, and credit rating agency representatives, where it announced these plans. The company aims not only to strengthen its current market presence but also to secure and lead the future market.
Becoming the TSMC of the Autonomous Driving Industry... Pursuing Foundry Business
First, Hyundai emphasized the advancement of autonomous driving technology. Currently, Hyundai is establishing a system that collects autonomous driving data while simultaneously training artificial intelligence (AI) models automatically, and is developing autonomous driving computing hardware with ensured safety and reliability. Based on this, Hyundai plans to implement an 'end-to-end deep learning model' that performs perception, decision-making, and control of autonomous vehicles in an integrated manner, which will be used to expand solutions to autonomous driving Level 4, where driver intervention is not required.
The company is also pursuing a 'foundry' business that sells autonomous vehicles to various autonomous driving software companies. After platformizing essential components for achieving Level 4 or higher autonomous driving, Hyundai plans to supply autonomous driving vehicle platforms to software companies. Each software company will receive autonomous vehicles tailored to their needs from Hyundai and provide services accordingly. Hyundai aims to solidify its position similar to Taiwan's TSMC, a powerful contract manufacturer in the AI semiconductor industry. Centered on the autonomous driving technology of Motional, a joint venture with the U.S. company Aptiv, Hyundai plans to expand robo-taxi services to multiple markets including the U.S., Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.
Hyundai is also building next-generation infotainment systems and an open ecosystem in preparation for the SDV era. It has already developed various sizes of central displays based on the infotainment operating system (OS) 'Android Automotive' and plans to sequentially apply them to mass-produced vehicles starting in the first half of 2026.
Additionally, Hyundai plans to unveil an SDV demonstration vehicle equipped with a high-performance computer-based electric and electronic computer system in the second half of 2026. Through this, the company intends to showcase stable autonomous driving and AI functions while demonstrating new services and businesses.
Full Commitment to Hydrogen Technology... Accelerating Transition to an Eco-Friendly Hydrogen Society
Another pillar of the 'Hyundai Way' is energy. Hyundai aims to strengthen its hydrogen energy technology and business capabilities to gain an advantage during the paradigm shift in future energy.
At the beginning of the year, Hyundai unveiled the hydrogen value chain business brand 'HTWO' at CES, the world's largest consumer electronics show, reflecting this strategy. The company has set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across all stages from vehicle production to operation and disposal by 2045 and is actively participating in hydrogen-related demonstration projects. A representative example is the joint project with the Indonesian government to demonstrate a hydrogen production model that converts organic waste into hydrogen. Hyundai also supplied 30 Xcient hydrogen fuel cell trucks as an official eco-friendly commercial truck supplier for the U.S. 'California Port Clean Truck Program (NoCal Zero)'.
