Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Releases Stockpiled Seafood for Chuseok... Up to 60% Discount
Release of 12,560 Tons of Seafood to Meet Increased Demand During Holidays
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 28th that it will release 12,560 tons of reserved seafood into the market in preparation for increased demand during the holiday season.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced the "Chuseok Peak Season Supply Stability Measures." The ministry will invest 30 billion KRW, the largest budget ever for holiday discount events, to conduct discount and rebate events at supermarkets, traditional markets, and online malls.
This year, the ministry expanded the government-reserved seafood supply by 10% compared to last year, increasing it to 12,560 tons. This includes 9,000 tons of pollock, 2,000 tons of squid, 900 tons of mackerel, 450 tons of hairtail, 160 tons of yellow croaker, and 50 tons of dried anchovies. The seafood supplied will be sold at up to 45% discounted prices compared to market prices at traditional markets and supermarkets nationwide. Considering consumer convenience, some of the supply will be processed into ceremonial items such as frozen pollock and dried croaker.
The ministry will also conduct discount and rebate events with a budget of 30 billion KRW, which is about 7 billion KRW more than last year, marking the largest scale ever. Through the "Korea Seafood Festival Chuseok Special" held at 42 supermarkets and online malls nationwide, consumers can purchase 13 types of seafood, including popular species such as pollock, mackerel, hairtail, squid, yellow croaker, and abalone, at discounts of up to 60% until the 15th of next month.
From the 9th to the 15th of next month, 114 traditional markets nationwide will hold a Onnuri gift certificate rebate event. If the purchase amount of domestic seafood is between 34,000 KRW and less than 67,000 KRW, 10,000 KRW will be refunded in Onnuri gift certificates; if it is 67,000 KRW or more, 20,000 KRW will be refunded.
