"No More Unpaid Wages... Changwon Special City Operates Task Force Ahead of Chuseok Holiday"
Promotion of Measures for Protecting Income and Rights of Unpaid Workers
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam will operate the Changwon City Task Force for Resolving Unpaid Wages for 17 days from August 28 to September 13, so that workers can spend the traditional Chuseok holiday without worrying about unpaid wages.
The Task Force for Resolving Unpaid Wages will operate reporting and reception desks for unpaid wages at the Regional Economy Division of City Hall and the Economic and Transportation Divisions of each district office. It will actively promote the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s “Dedicated Unpaid Wage Reporting Desk,” as well as the advance payment system for unpaid wages, the living expense loan program for workers with unpaid wages, and the employer loan program to support the settlement of unpaid wages.
According to the Changwon Branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, as of the end of July 2024, the amount of unpaid wages in Changwon City reached 18.8 billion KRW, a 44% increase compared to 13 billion KRW during the same period last year. In particular, the manufacturing sector saw a sharp rise, with unpaid wages amounting to 10.1 billion KRW, an 81% increase from 5.6 billion KRW in the same period last year.
Changwon Special City Mayor Hong Nampyo said, “Given the rising trend in unpaid wages, we will do our best to stabilize livelihoods during Chuseok by actively promoting the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s unpaid wage settlement system.”
Meanwhile, Changwon City operates a free labor attorney and labor counseling center year-round to proactively address labor-management issues such as unpaid wages, providing consultations and legal advice related to labor relations. If unpaid wages occur, a petition can be filed with the local employment and labor office with jurisdiction over the business location, and the procedure for settling unpaid wages will proceed.
