Prosecutors Appeal Suspended Sentence Given to Graduate Student Who Distributed 'Daema Jelly'
Suspended Prison Sentence in First Trial
Prosecution: "Strict Response Needed for New Synthetic Drugs"
A graduate student in his 20s accused of handing over jelly containing marijuana to an acquaintance received a suspended prison sentence in the first trial, but the prosecution has appealed.
The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 27th that it has filed an appeal against the first trial verdict sentencing Oh Mo (26) to 2 years in prison with a 3-year suspension for violating the Narcotics Control Act.
The prosecution stated the reason for the appeal, saying, "The defendant not only consumed the marijuana jelly himself but also provided it to acquaintances," and "Considering the need for a strict response to the rapidly spreading new types of drug crimes recently, we judged that a heavier sentence is necessary."
Oh is accused of receiving 20 pieces of marijuana-containing jelly from an unidentified foreign man near a club in Mapo-gu, Seoul, around December last year, consuming some of them, and providing some to acquaintances in March this year.
Previously, the prosecution had requested a 3-year prison sentence for Oh in the first trial.
