Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) announced on the 26th that it will operate the exhibition tour project "Gangnam Art" in collaboration with "2024 KIAF·Frieze Seoul" from the 29th of this month to September 8th, together with about 180 galleries and art museums in the district.
Gangnam-gu has recently established itself as the center of the Korean art market with the successive openings of prestigious overseas galleries. The district planned Gangnam Art utilizing gallery infrastructure to coincide with the exhibition period of "KIAF·Frieze Seoul," the largest domestic global art fair held at COEX.
The highlight of this year's Gangnam Art is the "G-Collection," which publicly exhibits the district office's collection for the first time externally. It will be displayed from September 4th to 8th at the Gangnam Art Promotion Hall in the lobby of COEX 1st floor, Hall B.
The district operates a "Corridor Art Museum," permanently exhibiting about 70 collected artworks in the corridors of the government building. Among these, eight works by famous artists that were previously difficult for visitors to access as they were located in offices and meeting rooms will be showcased this time.
Visitors can directly see works such as Nam June Paik's print "Casi," Kim Jong-hak's "Seoraksan Landscape" (Kim is known as the painter of Seorak), world-renowned pop artist Romero Britto's "Beautiful Day" and "Sleeping Together," Seok Cheol-ju's "Daily Life Diary (New Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land)," No Eun-nim's "Odenwald," and Kwon Ki-soo's "Time-white river with a ship."
The gallery stamp tour, held from the 29th to September 4th, involves 38 locations including galleries, art museums, and brand shops in the Sinsa, Apgujeong, Cheongdam, and Nonhyeon areas. Visitors can collect exhibition viewing stamps on the Gangnam Art leaflet provided at these locations and receive various gifts by visiting the Gangnam Art Promotion Hall near the East Gate on the 1st floor of COEX.
With 12 or more stamps, participants can receive one ticket to KIAF·Frieze Seoul (worth 80,000 KRW). Those who collect six or more stamps and complete SNS certification at the Gangnam Art Promotion Hall can receive one Gangnam-dol art toy. All participants in the stamp tour will be given a free drink coupon for Cafe H on the 11th floor of Hyundai Department Store Trade Center Branch.
The gallery docent tour will also be held four times from the 29th to 31st. Eight galleries including Gallery Now, Atelier Hermes, and Gallery Gaia will participate, and each tour visits three galleries with expert explanations.
On September 5th, "Cheongdam Night" will be held, allowing visitors to enjoy galleries in the Apgujeong and Cheongdam-dong areas late into the night. Twenty-two famous galleries such as Song Eun, White Cube, and Tang Contemporary Art will remain open until midnight, offering various events including night exhibitions, meetings with artists, wine tastings, DJ parties, cocktail receptions, and party hopping (enjoying multiple parties). Free shuttle buses will also be provided during the evening hours.
