[This Week's Books] 'Novels Speaking About Korea' and More
Novels Speak About Korea
This series, originally serialized in a daily newspaper with the aim of looking into Korean society through stories, has been compiled into a book. It includes 21 short stories, including Jang Kangmyeong's "Novel 2034," all of which are ultra-short stories of around 4,000 characters. Writers such as Gu Byeongmo, Lee Giho, Jo Gyeongran, Kim Mella, Jeong Bora, Gu Hyoseo, Son Wonpyeong, Jeong Ihyeon, and Gang Hwagi participated. The authors selected keywords themselves on the theme of "contemporary Korean society" and wrote their works accordingly. (Jang Kangmyeong et al. / Eunhaengnamu)
Such a Kind Individualist
This is a newly written ethical guidebook suited to the modern era. Based on the thoughts of great thinkers from ancient Greek philosopher Plato to Michael Sandel, a key figure in contemporary political philosophy and Harvard professor, it addresses issues ranging from trivial matters to profound problems such as racial discrimination, ableism, and environmental pollution. By presenting points to consider from various perspectives, the writing is structured to help seek ways of coexistence in today’s conflict-ridden world. (Written by Ham Gyujin / Yuno Book Publishing)
Scenes from the Liberation Period
This book unravels modern Korean history through key figures. It provides detailed accounts of anecdotes and events involving representative figures of modern Korean history such as Rhee Syngman, Kim Gu, Kim Il-sung, and Park Hyunyoung. It also meticulously analyzes these anecdotes and events to allow readers to examine both the truths and the hidden aspects of history. The liberation period was the time of the most intense ideological conflict in modern Korean history, and the author explains that historical tragedies in any era are ultimately the karmic consequences caused by people.
