On the 22nd, major foreign media reported that China stated, "We oppose any country allowing the Dalai Lama's visit under any pretext," regarding the meeting between a senior U.S. official and the spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama.
According to reports, senior officials from the U.S. State Department and the White House met with the Dalai Lama in New York the previous day. They conveyed that they "reaffirmed the United States' commitment to promoting the human rights of Tibetans."
