Macron Mourns French Legendary Actor Alain Delon... "A Monumental Figure"
Macron "Deleong, Make the Whole World Dream"
French President Emmanuel Macron mourned the passing of Alain Delon, France's legendary actor and hailed as the "handsome man of the century," on the 18th (local time), saying, "He was more than a star. He was a monumental figure in France."
President Macron said on X (formerly Twitter) that day, "Delon made the world dream by playing legendary roles," adding, "His unforgettable face had a great impact on our lives."
He also posted a photo of Delon in his youth taken in front of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.
Delon's children released a statement to AFP news agency on the same day, saying their father Alain Delon passed away after battling deteriorating health.
The statement said, "Alain-Fabien, Anouchka, Anthony, and Loubo (Delon's pet dog) are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father," adding, "He peacefully passed away at home at two o'clock, surrounded by his three children and family."
Born in France in 1935, Delon debuted in the film industry in 1957 with the movie When a Woman Approaches directed by Yves All?gret, and rose to stardom in 1960 by playing Tom Ripley, a poor young man dreaming of a turnaround in life, in Ren? Cl?ment's film Plein Soleil (The Sun Also Rises).
Nicknamed the "handsome man of the century," he appeared in over 90 films during his more than 50-year career, starring in over 80 of them as a top star. His representative works include Plein Soleil, Le Samoura? (1967), Is Paris Burning? (1966), Borsalino (1970), and Zorro (1975).
The Associated Press evaluated, "Whether playing a morally corrupt hero or a romantic male lead, Delon's presence was unforgettable."
