The government is supporting popup events to promote the charm of traditional markets and revitalize local commercial districts.
On the 16th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization announced that they will hold the traditional market popup event 'The Korean Nights' at Seoul Gyeongdong 1960 Night Market until the 18th.
This event was planned to promote the unique charm of the markets while revitalizing local commercial districts in connection with the 'Top 10 K-Tourism Markets.' It is being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' 'Visiting Breweries' project.
The 'Top 10 K-Tourism Markets' selected by the Korea Tourism Organization include ▲Pungmul Market (Seoul) ▲Seomun Market (Daegu) ▲Sinpo International Market (Incheon) ▲Yangdong Traditional Market (Gwangju) ▲Suwon Nammun Rodeo Market (Gyeonggi) ▲Sokcho Tourist Seafood Market (Gangwon) ▲Danyang Gukyeong Market (Chungbuk) ▲Suncheon Ujang Market (Jeonnam) ▲Andong Market Union (Gyeongbuk) ▲Jinju Jungang Nonggae Market (Gyeongnam).
Under the theme 'Samil Yaha (Three Days and Nights Talk),' this popup features 10 promotional booths showcasing the unique characteristics of the 10 'K-Tourism Markets.' Along with traditional liquor tasting events, special menus using local specialties such as Danyang six-clove garlic skewers and Sokcho shrimp cold salad will be offered, and DJing and indie band live performances will take place.
Lee Sang-min, Acting Director of the National Tourism Headquarters at the Korea Tourism Organization, said, "This popup is a successful collaboration case with the Gyeongdong Market Merchants Association and will contribute to revitalizing the local economy," adding, "We plan to try various approaches so that traditional markets can establish themselves as new cultural tourism content."
