YG Entertainment Turns to Loss in Q2... "Final Growing Pain for Next Year"
Sales of 90 Billion KRW, 43% Decrease Year-on-Year
Operating Loss Turns to Deficit of 10.9 Billion KRW
YG Entertainment announced on the 9th that its consolidated sales for the second quarter of this year amounted to 90 billion KRW, a 43.1% decrease compared to the same period last year. Operating profit turned into a loss during the same period, recording a deficit of 10.9 billion KRW.
The company explained, "Revenue declined due to continued investment-related expenses," adding, "Please consider this year as the inaugural year of investment to grow low-experience IP (intellectual property) into top-tier assets."
In particular, the second quarter was the debut quarter for Baby Monster, resulting in high initial costs due to promotions. Additionally, intangible asset amortization, which increased compared to the same period last year due to multiple artist contract renewals last year, also had an impact.
YG is actively promoting, including holding overseas fan meeting tours after officially debuting the rookie girl group Baby Monster this year. Almost all affiliated artists, including rookies, are expected to resume activities next year.
The company stated, "Baby Monster will release a full-length album in the second half of the year and is preparing for a tour in early next year," adding, "Treasure, who has surpassed four years since debut, plans to present global projects beyond Japan and Asia."
In the second half of the year, a 15th anniversary concert for 2NE1 is also scheduled. The 2NE1 Seoul concert, held on October 5-6, sold out all seats for the second show immediately after ticket sales began in May. Over 400,000 people accessed the site simultaneously to purchase tickets. Starting with the Seoul concert in October, 2NE1 plans to hold performances at Kobe World Hall in Japan at the end of November and Ariake Arena in Tokyo in early December.
