Gumi City to Build Hyper-scale AI Infrastructure... Selected for Ministry of Science Project
Support for Infrastructure Development and AI-Converged Farm Platform Demonstration
Total Project Cost of 23.1 Billion Won Invested from 2024 to 2026
Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province has been finally selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT's 2024 project to establish a regional specialized hyper-scale AI cloud farm demonstration and expansion environment.
Hyper-scale AI (generative AI) refers to next-generation AI that has evolved from conventional artificial intelligence (AI), capable of producing text, images, and other user-desired outputs through self-learned algorithms. It learns and makes decisions using hundreds of times more data than existing AI, making its learning and judgment process closer to that of the human brain.
Cloud farm refers to a cloud data center.
This project is a national initiative aimed at enhancing Korea's AI competitiveness and supporting corporate innovation based on hyper-scale AI to promote the development of regional specialized industries, amid fierce global competition among big tech companies to lead hyper-scale AI services.
From 2024 to 2026, Gumi City, together with North Gyeongsang Province, Pohang City, and Gyeongsan City, will invest a total project budget of 23.1 billion KRW (11.1 billion from the national government, 3.6 billion from the province, 1.568 billion from the cities, and 6.832 billion from other sources) to establish a regional specialized hyper-scale AI infrastructure, develop and demonstrate a hyper-scale AI convergence platform, and foster a collaborative ecosystem among local industries, academia, and research institutes.
In particular, Gumi City plans to develop and demonstrate hyper-scale AI convergence services in the defense industry manufacturing sector, a regional strategic industry, to rapidly produce results in defense product design by utilizing hyper-scale AI and spatial computing technologies.
Spatial computing refers to technologies that provide new experiences by merging digital content with physical spaces, such as mixed reality, extended reality, and the metaverse.
Additionally, the city will support the creation of digital manuals necessary for the operation and maintenance of defense products, thereby improving the efficiency of defense product manufacturing and maintenance and accelerating commercialization efforts.
Furthermore, with Kumoh National Institute of Technology at the center, the city will strive to foster a collaborative ecosystem among industry, academia, and research by nurturing hyper-scale AI professionals and supporting startups in the region.
Mayor Kim Jangho stated, "As the development of hyper-scale AI infrastructure and services by domestic and global big tech companies accelerates, there will be a growing need for hyper-scale AI infrastructure and technology tailored to the conditions of regional specialized industries. We will actively support the establishment of a foundation for the regional hyper-scale AI sector and the implementation of demonstrations that reflect the needs of local companies."
