Ulsan Office of Education to Strengthen Support for Basic Academic Skills During Summer Vacation
Seasonal Semester Program for Third Graders and First-Year Middle School Students
Seasonal Semester 'Dream Leap Career and Learning Camp' Also Held
Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cheon Changsu) will operate the "Learning Leap Seasonal Semester" and "Dream Leap Career and Learning Integrated Camp" for 3rd grade elementary and 1st grade middle school students during the summer vacation to ensure thorough support for basic academic achievement.
The Learning Leap Seasonal Semester is a supplementary curriculum program held during the transition period between semesters and school years, utilizing the vacation to provide intensive support for basic academic skills based on accurate diagnosis before academic gaps widen.
Ulsan Office of Education has arranged for this seasonal semester to be conducted in continuation with the elementary and middle school supplementary curriculum programs that are held during the regular semester. A total of 184 schools (67 elementary, 61 middle, and 56 high schools) are participating in the supplementary curriculum program.
In particular, Ulsan Office of Education has provided additional budget support for the seasonal semester program to elementary schools with a high number of students who have not achieved proficiency in the 3R’s (reading, writing, arithmetic) or have poor accessibility to educational resources, as a preventive measure.
Schools operating the seasonal semester will integrate supplementary curriculum programs, self-esteem enhancement programs, and career programs during the vacation to help participating students improve their basic academic skills.
Additionally, as a unique seasonal semester program in Ulsan, the "Dream Leap Career and Learning Integrated Camp" will be held from August 12 to 14 at Okdong Elementary School in Nam-gu.
The "Dream Leap Career and Learning Integrated Camp" is designed to motivate students with the concept of "dream," helping them set concrete goals for their future careers and foster interest in learning, thereby fueling academic improvement.
A total of 107 students from 3rd grade elementary and 1st grade middle school will participate in this program.
For 3rd grade elementary students, Ulsan Office of Education will operate "Dream Green E (E, elementary)," a career exploration course based on fundamental understanding of mathematics and Korean. For 1st grade middle school students, "Dream Green M (M, middle)" will focus on basic English grammar activities, ecological transition education such as environmental pollution, and exploration of careers of interest.
These programs are designed to help students independently acquire, apply, practice, and reflect on learning content by linking metacognitive strategies and career exploration competencies with both curricular and extracurricular activities.
The camp staff consists of 19 professional instructors including native speakers, career guidance (coaching) instructors, and subject instructors, as well as 6 assistants capable of providing first aid and on-demand counseling, and 10 members of the basic academic achievement support team.
Lim Chaedeok, Director of Elementary Education, said, "For 3rd grade elementary students, we are strengthening basic language, mathematical, and digital literacy, and for 1st grade middle school students, we are working to enhance the effectiveness of the free semester system to support basic academic achievement. In particular, we hope this vacation will be an opportunity for students to participate in the career and learning camp, reflect on their dreams, and develop learning strategies tailored to their goals."
