Daejeon Maebong Middle School Juniors Cheer for Gold, Inspired by Alumni Oh Sanguk and Park Sangwon

View original imageThe Korean men's sabre fencing national team achieved their third consecutive Olympic gold in the team event, while students from Daejeon Maebong Middle School, the alma mater of Oh Sangwook and Park Sangwon, held a golden cheering event for their seniors.
On the evening of the 31st of last month, over 50 members of the Daejeon Maebong Middle School fencing team and students enthusiastically cheered every time Oh Sangwook and Park Sangwon appeared on TV, supporting the two athletes with one heart.
The national team faced Canada in the quarterfinals and secured a decisive victory with a score of 45-33. In the semifinals, they defeated France, the birthplace of fencing, 45-39 to advance to the finals.
In the final held in the early morning of the 1st, they overcame Hungary 45-41, achieving the remarkable feat of winning the Olympic men's team event for the third consecutive time.
From the quarterfinals to the finals, Oh Sangwook, the individual gold medalist, and Park Sangwon, the youngest member of the team, played pivotal roles whenever the team faced challenges, leading them to the top of the world.
Oh Sangwook and Park Sangwon first picked up a fencing sword and began their journey as fencers at Daejeon Maebong Middle School. Oh Sangwook later graduated from Daejeon Songchon High School and Daejeon University and is currently affiliated with Daejeon City Hall. Park Sangwon graduated from Daejeon Songchon High School and Korea National Sport University and is also currently active with Daejeon City Hall.
One student who participated in the cheering event said, "Watching our school seniors and fencing role models Oh Sangwook and Park Sangwon win gold medals at the Olympics was incredibly moving and made me so proud. I will work hard in training to follow in their footsteps and become a world-class fencer who represents not only Korea but the world."
