On the 1st, LG Chem announced that it delivered spoke guards made from eco-friendly materials to 10 children in collaboration with the social value realization project company COC Lab.
Spoke guards are round protective plates attached to the wheelchair spokes. They serve to protect fingers or IV lines from getting caught while rolling the wheels.
Since 2018, COC Lab has been conducting a social contribution activity called the "Make My Own Spoke Guard" project, which allows children who use wheelchairs to design their own spoke guards.
LG Chem added significance by supporting the application of eco-friendly materials to the spoke guards. LG Chem provided all processes free of charge, from recycled plastic materials to spoke guard manufacturing, producing a total of 100 spoke guards made from recycled materials and delivering them to COC Lab.
The children designed their own spoke guards in various combinations, including their favorite characters, animals, as well as drawings, patterns, and phrases they drew themselves, together with young designers. The purpose is to naturally express what the children like and communicate with those around them, aiming to change uncomfortable perceptions about wheelchairs.
One child who decorated a spoke guard shared, "In the past, I felt that people stared because I was disabled, but now it seems they are interested in the artwork on the wheels."
