According to the revision of the National Health Promotion Act, starting from August 17, Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Gang-su) will designate areas within 30 meters from the boundaries of kindergartens, daycare centers, and elementary, middle, and high schools as non-smoking zones.
This expands the existing non-smoking zones from within 10 meters of daycare and kindergarten facility boundaries to within 30 meters, and newly establishes non-smoking zones for elementary, middle, and high school facilities.
However, the designation of non-smoking zones within the existing school absolute protection zones (areas within a 50-meter radius from school entrances) will remain unchanged.
As of the end of May this year, there are 181 daycare centers, 27 kindergartens, and 50 elementary, middle, and high schools in Mapo-gu, totaling 258 facilities. A fine of 100,000 KRW will be imposed for smoking in non-smoking zones.
The district is actively promoting the expansion of non-smoking zones by posting notices and banners, seeking cooperation from related facilities, and through the Mapo-gu newsletter ‘Naegojang Mapo’, outdoor electronic billboards, Mapo TV, and SNS.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We ask for the active cooperation and understanding of citizens for the policy to expand non-smoking zones to prevent secondhand smoke damage to children and adolescents and to support healthy growth.”
Meanwhile, the Mapo-gu Public Health Center operates a free smoking cessation clinic for residents who wish to quit smoking. Professional smoking cessation counselors provide one-on-one customized counseling and support with smoking cessation aids, and offer continuous management via phone or text messages for six months.
