QuantaMatrix, an innovative clinical microbiology diagnostics company, announced that the core technology of ‘uRAST (Ultra-Rapid Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing)’, an all-in-one rapid antimicrobial susceptibility integrated testing solution jointly developed with Seoul National University Hospital and Seoul National University College of Engineering, has been published in the prestigious journal Nature.


In ‘uRAST’, synthetic nanoparticles with the ability to bind to microorganisms selectively isolate bacteria from blood to obtain pure bacterial samples, providing rapid test results. The test accuracy was 94.9%, showing high concordance with existing testing methods. It solved the technical challenge previously considered impossible, which is detecting a small number of bacteria (1/10^9 blood cells) in the early stages of blood infection. Commercializing uRAST technology is expected to offer faster and more accurate diagnostic and treatment opportunities for medical staff and patients.


According to the British medical journal The Lancet, 1.27 million people worldwide died from antibiotic resistance in 2019. It is reported that by 2050, the number will exceed 10 million, 1.2 times more than the 8.2 million deaths caused by cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the antibiotic resistance issue could cause the greatest health crisis at the level of the COVID-19 pandemic.
