Big Data Platform Associations from Five Sectors Gather in One Place

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Lee Heeseung) held the 'Big Square Union Data Specialist Company Networking' event at the Busan Port International Exhibition and Convention Center on the 11th.

Big Square Union is a big data platform established with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency since 2019 as part of the 'Big Data Platform and Construction' project. It is the first big data platform consortium in Korea, consisting of five platforms in the fields of coastal (KIOST), transportation (Korea Transport Institute), forestry (Korea Forestry Promotion Institute), environment (Korea Water Resources Corporation), and agri-food (Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation).

The event, hosted by Big Square Union and organized by KIOST, was attended by around 250 experts from related organizations, including KIOST Vice President Kang Dongjin, National Information Society Agency Director Shin Sinae, Environmental Daily CEO Kim Iksoo, Busan Metropolitan City Marine, Agriculture, and Fisheries Department Team Leader Kim Eunkyung, as well as representatives from the Korea Transport Institute, Korea Expressway Corporation, Korea Water Resources Corporation, Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, and Korea Forestry Promotion Institute.

This event was organized to share the current status of data construction for the 'Big Data Platform' among related organizations and to seek new ideas for applying cutting-edge technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to the coastal, transportation, and environmental sectors.

The event featured expert presentations, including: ▲Introduction of operational achievements of the coastal big data platform and excellent cases of discovering new businesses based on cooperation with Busan City (KIOST Marine Big Data & AI Center Director Lee Cheolyong) ▲Prospects for a future society led by AI in the era of digital singularity (Chung-Ang University Department of Computer Engineering Professor Kim Sangyun) ▲Introduction of Busan City’s big data industry development support program (Busan Technopark Busan Big Data Innovation Center Team Leader Kim Deokjung).

In line with the rapid digital transformation of the marine and fisheries industry, KIOST has established a separate Marine Digital Resources Department to systematically manage and utilize marine data resources. In particular, since launching the coastal big data platform in 2022, KIOST has opened 294 types of data by 2023 and plans to open an additional 129 types this year.

KIOST President Lee Heeseung stated, "Marine big data is an important resource for strengthening the nation's scientific and technological competitiveness," and added, "We hope that this event will lead to the discovery and actual implementation of various ideas utilizing big data."
