Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Supports Elderly Paper Collectors to Escape Labor in Heatwave
Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City operates the ‘Resource Recycling Activity Group’ to provide a safe working environment for elderly people collecting recyclables.
The Resource Recycling Activity Group was launched to prevent situations where elderly people living by collecting waste paper and recyclables are forced into ‘heatwave labor’ and to promote their livelihood stability.
The Resource Recycling Activity Group will work twice a week for two hours a day (up to 16 hours per month) from the 1st to the 31st of next month at nearby neighborhood administrative welfare centers, performing tasks such as pre-sorting recyclables, encouraging proper disposal in separate collection bins, cleaning, and promoting separate disposal. The compensation will be calculated proportionally to the hours worked, with a maximum payment of 200,000 KRW per person.
