Sacheon City Conducts Comprehensive Survey of Children with Temporary Newborn Identification Numbers
17 Children... Verification of Birth Registration, Whereabouts, and Safety
Sacheon City in Gyeongnam Province announced on the 26th that it will conduct a full-scale survey from July 1 to August 31 on children assigned temporary newborn numbers, to confirm whether birth registration has been completed and to verify their whereabouts and safety.
A temporary newborn number is a seven-digit number automatically assigned by the government at birth for vaccination purposes. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's "Integrated Vaccination System" records the newborn's date of birth, gender, birth hospital, and guardian's personal information.
The city plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of 17 children who were assigned temporary newborn numbers between 2023 and June 2024 but have not been registered at birth and therefore do not have resident registration numbers.
Officials from the Women and Family Division's Child Protection Team will visit the households in person to check the status of birth registration, as well as the children's whereabouts and safety, while also conducting administrative investigations in parallel.
This full-scale survey aims to identify any possible cases of child abandonment, death, or abuse, and to provide information on available services such as social security benefit applications.
During the survey period, the city will actively guide families through the birth registration process for children who have not yet been registered, and will take legal action, such as requesting police investigations, if any criminal activity is discovered.
Mayor Park Dongsik stated, "We will actively ensure that no child born during this period of declining birth rates is abandoned or neglected," adding, "We will continue to develop a variety of policies to improve child-rearing conditions."
