Two out of Three Gyeonggi Residents and Middle and High School Students Say "Current School Uniform Support Method Should Change"
68% of Gyeonggi Province residents and 65% of middle and high school students in the province believe that the current school uniform support system should be changed.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced the results of a survey conducted on residents and middle and high school students in the province on the topic of ‘school uniform support policy’ on the 21st.
The survey results showed that 68% of Gyeonggi residents and 65% of students in the province responded positively to the ‘direct purchase method by parents through cash or voucher support.’
Since 2019, the Office of Education has been providing school uniforms in kind through school-organized purchases starting with new middle school students. From this year’s new students, the support amount has been increased from 300,000 KRW to 400,000 KRW per person, and the support scope has been expanded to include daily wear and sportswear, allowing schools to autonomously decide the items for integrated school uniform support.
In this survey, opinions between Gyeonggi residents and students differed regarding the priority order of items to be supported by schools under the integrated school uniform support policy.
Gyeonggi residents ranked formal-style school uniforms (38%) as the top priority, followed by casual clothes (32%), daily wear (16%), and sportswear (11%).
On the other hand, students chose casual clothes (39%) that enhance activity as the top priority, replacing formal-style school uniforms. This was followed by sportswear (34%), formal-style school uniforms (11%), and daily wear (11%).
Additionally, when asked about the necessity of school uniforms, 87% of Gyeonggi residents answered that they are necessary. However, only 49% of students responded that they are necessary, which is less than half.
Um Shin-ok, head of the Education Welfare Division at the Office of Education, said, "Through this public opinion survey, we confirmed various demands such as diversification of school uniforms, price stabilization, and improvement of purchasing methods," and promised, "We will continuously promote policy supplementation and system improvement to expand consumer choice and enhance satisfaction."
The survey was conducted through telephone interviews with 1,200 Gyeonggi residents aged 19 and over over three days from May 27, and a mobile survey of 1,071 middle and high school students in the province over seven days from May 30.
