Gyeonggi-do to Increase Opportunity Income for Disabled to 10,000 People... Monthly Support Raised to 100,000 Won
Gyeonggi Province will expand the number of recipients of the Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities to 10,000 starting in July and increase the support amount to 100,000 KRW per month for six months. Earlier this year, Gyeonggi Province completed payments of the ‘Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities’ to 7,000 people in the first half of the year.
On the 20th, Gyeonggi Province announced that from July this year, the support target will be increased from 7,000 to 10,000 people, and the Opportunity Income amount will be expanded from 50,000 KRW to 100,000 KRW per month. To this end, consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare regarding social security changes are currently underway. The support payments for the second half of the year will be made sequentially from September to participants whose physical activity records are verified through smartwatches.
Previously, Gyeonggi Province paid Opportunity Income of 50,000 KRW per month for up to six months, totaling 300,000 KRW, to 7,000 people, including 5,836 applicants from last year and 1,164 applicants from January to March this year.
The Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities is a program that provides 50,000 KRW per month to persons with severe disabilities. Recipients of the Opportunity Income must wear a smartwatch and engage in physical activity at least twice a week for one hour or more, taking care of their own health through movement. Gyeonggi Province expects that this proactive health maintenance by persons with disabilities will reduce social costs (medical expenses, care costs) and recognizes this value by providing the Opportunity Income.
Earlier, through consultations on social security changes with the Ministry of Health and Welfare last year, Gyeonggi Province agreed to provide 50,000 KRW per month in Opportunity Income to 7,000 people for one year.
The total number of applicants for the Opportunity Income for Persons with Disabilities within the province, including previous applicants, is 10,503.
Heo Seung-beom, Director of Welfare at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will proceed smoothly with the consultations on social security changes with the Ministry of Health and Welfare to ensure that more persons with disabilities can receive Opportunity Income starting in the second half of the year."
