Funeral Home Accountant Embezzled 2.3 Billion KRW Over 8 Years, Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison
Court: "Massive financial difficulties... Most damages remain unrecovered"
An accounting staff member who embezzled 2.3 billion won over eight years at the funeral home where she worked was sentenced to prison.
On the 17th, the Cheonan Branch of the Daejeon District Court, 1st Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Jeon Gyeong-ho), sentenced Ms. A (55, female), who was detained and indicted on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement), to four years in prison.
Ms. A, who worked as an accounting staff member at a funeral home in Asan, was brought to trial on charges of embezzling over 2.3 billion won in more than 4,700 instances from May 2015 to August 2023.
Ms. A used the embezzled money to purchase insurance and real estate, and after the crime was uncovered, she returned 400 million won.

The court explained the sentencing rationale, stating, "The victim company, which is not large in scale, appears to have suffered significant financial difficulties due to the crime, and most of the damages have not been recovered. Considering that the defendant admitted to the crime and showed remorse, the sentence was determined accordingly."
