Gwanak-gu Installs 170 Smart Security Lights in Crime-Prone Alleyways
Budget of 130 million KRW allocated; 170 smart security lights to be installed this year prioritizing crime prevention zones... Creating a safe walking environment for residents in crime-prone areas with high single-person household density
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) will replace existing security lights with smart security lights in crime-prone areas densely populated by single-person households to create a safer walking environment for residents.
The district has secured a total budget of 130 million KRW, including a city subsidy of 100 million KRW, to install 170 smart security lights this year in the Sinsa-dong area, designated as a 2024 crime prevention enhancement zone by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.
The smart security lights are LED lights embedded with beacon (near-field wireless communication) based Internet of Things (IoT) technology and are linked with Seoul City's "Ansim-i App".
Normally, when a pedestrian activates the safe return monitoring on the "Ansim-i App" and passes near a security light, the brightness of the surrounding lights increases (maintaining 80% illumination under normal conditions and 100% when monitoring is active), creating a safer walking environment.
Additionally, in an emergency, residents can press the emergency report menu on the "Ansim-i App" or shake their smartphone, causing the security lights to flash continuously to alert those nearby. At the same time, the control center and police station are immediately notified, leading to prompt dispatch to the scene.
The district expects that the smart security lights will maximize the effectiveness of emergency reporting and greatly contribute to crime prevention by enabling faster on-site response and dispatch.
Meanwhile, the district operates a management system by installing two-way flashing devices on security lights that allow remote monitoring of malfunctions or outages. This system enables real-time checking of security light status via personal computers and smartphones, ensuring quick repairs and preventing long-term outages, thereby helping to prevent crimes in blind spots.
