Police Conduct Disaster Safety Training... "Strengthening Response to Heavy Rainfall in Summer"
Customized Regional Education, Collaboration with Local Governments
The police announced on the 13th that they will simultaneously conduct 'disaster safety education' as part of establishing preparedness measures against natural disasters ahead of the summer heavy rainfall season, which lasts until the 17th of next month.
Yoon Hee-geun, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, emphasized at last month's nationwide command meeting that "since localized heavy rains and other abnormal weather phenomena are occurring, proactive response to summer disasters is necessary." The police, as an emergency rescue support agency under the Disaster and Safety Act, assist emergency rescue agencies such as the fire department in conducting life-saving activities.
This education is divided into 'first aid training' for life-saving at disaster and accident sites and 'disaster expert invited training' to strengthen initial response capabilities at disaster scenes. The first aid training is conducted mainly on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of automated external defibrillators with the cooperation of the Korean Red Cross, public health centers, and fire stations.
The disaster expert invited training is conducted by inviting experts such as the Korea Forest Service, Korea Meteorological Administration, and professors from related departments according to the major disaster types in each metropolitan police agency. In Daegu and Gyeongbuk, which have many mountainous terrains, officials from the Korea Forest Engineering Association and the Korea Landslide Safety Association are invited to lecture on initial response measures in case of landslides. In Gwangju, the Yeongsan River Flood Control Office, and in Jeju, officials from the Korea Meteorological Administration are invited to provide education on river flooding prediction and response, as well as the utilization of meteorological information.
