Busan Office of Education Launches 'Public Education Online Lectures'... Taking Responsibility for Middle School Students' Academic Achievement!
Busan-style Online Lectures for First-Year Middle School Students Implemented
The public education online lecture program, first introduced nationwide by the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education last year, will now take responsibility for improving the academic performance of middle school students in the Busan area this year.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 10th that it will hold a pilot opening event for the 'Busan-Style Online Lecture Middle School Program' at Dongpyeong Middle School in Busanjin-gu on the morning of the 12th, and will officially begin operations from mid-June.
The Office of Education will expand and distribute the Busan-style online lectures, which were provided to first-year high school students in September last year to address regional educational disparities, reduce private education expenses, and promote self-directed learning, to first-year middle school students in the Busan area.
The 'Busan-Style Online Lecture Middle School Program' is operated for first-year middle school students in Busan. The subjects include Korean, mathematics, and English, with content consisting of approximately six regular courses with around 120 sessions and about 18 short-form videos. In the first half of the year, Korean, mathematics, and English will be offered, with social studies and science to be added in the second half.
The instructors are teachers from middle and high schools in Busan. After document screening, teaching demonstrations, and interviews, 12 teachers were selected: two each for Korean, mathematics, English, and social studies, and four for science. The teaching materials are jointly developed by the instructors and the production support team teachers and will be distributed free of charge.
Unlike existing private online lectures that focus on teaching problem-solving techniques, the Busan-Style Online Lecture (Middle School Program) is designed to help first-year middle school students develop the ability to study independently. It explains the basic concepts and principles presented in the curriculum and textbooks in detail and is structured to help students apply them to various problems.
In addition, the questioning methods have been diversified to suit the characteristics of today's students, who are familiar with visual media. Alongside the traditional text-based Q&A, students can capture parts they do not understand or upload short videos to ask questions.
The period from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., after school hours, will be designated as the 'intensive response time' to provide prompt feedback.
In particular, about 18 short-form content pieces popular among teenagers have also been prepared. These will provide background and supplementary knowledge to help students better understand the lecture content and increase their interest and participation.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education expects that this Busan-Style Online Lecture Middle School Program, together with WeCanDo School, the Character Math and English Camp, and the Busan Academic Achievement Support System (BASS), will have a significant synergistic effect on improving the academic performance of students in the Busan area.
