Selected as part of the ‘2024 World Heritage Utilization Program,’ a national heritage agency public project, it was implemented for the first time this year.
After recruiting participants nationwide in May, a total of 175 families and 590 people applied, showing great interest. Considering the applicants’ residential areas, 9 teams with 34 participants were finally selected.
On the first day of the camp, participants gathered at the Ramsar Gochang Mudflat Center, received orientation and birdwatching education, and then conducted birdwatching activities at the Gochang Mudflat. On the second day, activities such as mudflat island exploration, shellfish collecting, and seaglass utilization experiences were held at the Mandol Mudflat Experience Learning Center.
The 2024 Gochang Mudflat Birdwatching Camp consists of two sessions, with the second camp scheduled for October.
The county plans to continue conducting ongoing educational programs about the Gochang Mudflat starting with this camp.
It aims to provide children and adolescents, who may be unfamiliar with the concept of ‘World Natural Heritage,’ with opportunities to enjoy world heritage sites long-term and to foster values regarding mudflat conservation.
Oh Mi-sook, head of the county’s Tourism Industry Division, said, “We hope that through this camp, the children and youth generation will grow into future leaders in wetland conservation,” adding, “We will continue to promote the value of the Gochang Mudflat, a World Natural Heritage site, and implement various world heritage utilization programs for education.”
