Yeongyang County Welcomes Arrival of 35 Seasonal Workers from Laos
Contributing to Easing Labor Shortages During the Farming Season
Yeongyang County, North Gyeongsang Province, announced on May 30 that 35 foreign seasonal workers from Laos had entered the country through an MOU agreement.
The 35 workers arriving from Laos entered as a result of an MOU signed between Yeongyang County and Laos to diversify the countries from which foreign seasonal workers are recruited. Based on this, the county plans to determine the scale of future foreign seasonal worker programs.
After completing an entry orientation covering relevant regulations, compliance requirements, and crime prevention education, these workers will be assigned to farms, where they are expected to help alleviate the labor shortage during the busy farming season for a minimum of five months and up to six months.
County Governor Oh Dochang stated, "The arrival of workers from Laos, following those from Vietnam, will greatly help address the labor shortage in Yeongyang County," adding, "We will do our best to provide continuous support to both farm owners and workers and to ensure that no safety issues arise."
Currently, in Yeongyang County, 355 workers have entered through the MOU system and 107 through the family invitation system for marriage immigrants, totaling 412 workers assigned to 139 farms. Additional seasonal workers are scheduled to arrive in June and August, with a total of 869 workers expected to be deployed to 298 farms this year.
