In US Presidential Polls, Biden Leads in Two-Party Race, Trump Ahead in Multi-Candidate Contest
In a rematch between former and current presidents, a November U.S. presidential election poll showed that in a head-to-head contest, President Joe Biden holds the lead, while in a multi-candidate race, former President Donald Trump is ahead.
On the 30th (local time), NPR, PBS NewsHour, and Marist released the results of a presidential election poll conducted from the 21st to 23rd (local time) among 1,122 U.S. voters, with a margin of error of ±3.7 percentage points. The survey was based on the question, "If the election were held today, who would you vote for?" For respondents who had not yet decided, a follow-up question asked, "Who are you leaning towards?" and the answers were combined.
In the head-to-head matchup, President Biden led former President Trump by 2 percentage points, with 50% support compared to Trump's 48%. This 2-point lead for Biden is the same figure as in the poll conducted earlier this month.
Among voters who said they "definitely will vote," President Biden also led with 50%, but the gap with former President Trump (49%) narrowed to just 1 percentage point. This is a decrease from the previous poll, where Biden led by 5 percentage points (52% to 47%).
On the other hand, in the multi-candidate race including minor candidates such as Robert Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein, former President Trump led with 44% support, ahead of President Biden's 40%. Kennedy Jr. received 8%, Stein 3%, and West 2% support respectively.
In the previous multi-candidate poll by the same organizations, Biden and Trump were tied at 42%, with Kennedy at 11%, and Stein and West each at 2%.
NPR analyzed that the reason the latest polls show Biden leading in the two-candidate race and Trump leading in the multi-candidate race is due to divided support among young voters who back the Democratic Party.
