President Kang Junseok: "Leading Port Paradigm Shift in the Hyperconnected Era with ESG Management"
Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Kang Junseok) has published the "2023 Sustainability Management Report," which contains last year's ESG management achievements.
This is the third time BPA has published a sustainability management report, following the releases in 2021 and 2022.
This report is organized to help various stakeholders easily understand BPA's ESG policies and activities, based on BPA's ESG management strategy, and includes: ▲ growth process and key achievements ▲ activities and results by ESG field ▲ self-assessment of compliance with the government's supply chain response K-ESG guidelines ▲ ESG disclosure items.
In particular, this report addresses new environmental issues such as ▲ expansion of eco-friendly and renewable energy use ▲ biodiversity conservation, in line with global policy changes, and details systematic ESG management activities related to these topics.
BPA has achieved results such as ▲ a 9.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario ▲ a 71% reduction in ultrafine dust emissions compared to the base year (2018) ▲ the opening of "New Port Terminal 7," Korea's first fully automated and eco-friendly port powered 100% by electricity, through efforts to create a green port free of fine dust and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Based on mutual growth and cooperation with various stakeholders, BPA is also actively engaging in activities to revitalize the local economy in various ways.
BPA is taking the lead as a priming force connecting the port and the local community through ▲ mutual growth for the innovative development of local SMEs ▲ region-specific social contribution projects ▲ creating a safe working environment free from disasters and safety accidents ▲ efforts to guarantee stakeholders' human rights.
Furthermore, by prioritizing value management based on fairness and trust, BPA has also focused on management innovation and transparent management suitable for a top-tier port, achieving ▲ 20 consecutive years of surplus management since its establishment ▲ the highest grade (97.7 points) in the public data operation evaluation by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety ▲ selection as an excellent institution in the handling of civil complaints by the National Petition Portal.
In addition, BPA conducts self-assessments based on the government's "Supply Chain Response K-ESG Guidelines (V1.0)" and reflects the results in its ESG strategy.
As a result of these activities and efforts, BPA received recognition for its overall ESG management performance, including 12 commendations and 13 certifications (accreditations) from the government and external organizations, such as receiving the Prime Minister's Commendation at the 2023 Sustainability Management Merit Government Award Ceremony.
Kang Junseok, President of BPA, stated, "Based on ESG management, we will lead the paradigm shift of ports in the hyper-connected era and further enhance the sustainability of Busan Port, the heart of Korea's logistics that never sleeps, through continuous challenge and innovation."
