Gochang-gun Conducts Joint Crackdown on License Plate Seizure for Overdue Vehicles

Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk announced on the 29th that the joint crackdown team (county office, police station, Korea Expressway Corporation) was formed at Gochang IC the previous day to simultaneously carry out license plate seizure of vehicles with overdue local taxes and non-tax revenue fines, as well as crack down on illegally registered vehicles.

The seizure targets are vehicles that have overdue automobile tax payments twice or more (three times or more for vehicles registered in other cities or counties).

They conducted selective crackdowns on overdue vehicles by analyzing not only local taxes but also non-tax revenues and various vehicle-related fines.

The county induces voluntary payment by issuing seizure warnings for vehicles with one overdue automobile tax through license plate seizure of delinquent vehicles.

Also, considering the economic activities of the defaulters, for livelihood vehicles, differentiated collection activities are carried out by encouraging payment through installment plans or seizure warnings, distinguishing them from habitual defaulters.

Through this, 35 overdue vehicles were detected on the day, of which 3 were seized on site. 32 vehicles received seizure warning measures.

As of May 27, 2024, automobile tax arrears in Gochang-gun amount to 309 million KRW, accounting for 20.8% of the total arrears of 1.481 billion KRW.

Owners of the seized vehicles must visit the seizure department after fully paying the overdue amount to retrieve their license plates.

Operating a vehicle without license plates will result in a fine of up to 3 million KRW according to Article 10, Paragraph 4 and Article 84 of the Automobile Management Act.

Park Jin-sang, Director of Finance Department of Gochang-gun, said, “We hope that this crackdown will foster a clean and fair tax payment culture where habitual delinquent vehicles cannot operate. We will continue to do our best to improve collection rates and realize tax justice through active delinquent vehicle measures such as seizure and towing.”
