National Chairpersons of Provincial Councils Pass Resolution Urging Inclusion of '5·18 Spirit' in Constitutional Preamble
At the 3rd extraordinary meeting of the Council of Chairpersons of Provincial Councils of the Republic of Korea held in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, the "Resolution Urging the Inclusion of the Spirit of May 18 in the Preamble of the Constitution," proposed by the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Chairman Jeong Muchang), was passed as originally proposed in the plenary session.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Council on the 28th, the Council of Chairpersons of Provincial Councils stated in the resolution, "Although a national consensus has been formed on the historical facts of the May 18 Democratic Movement, distortion and disparagement still continue," and emphasized, "May 18 is not the history of a specific region or generation, but the history of all of the Republic of Korea."
They further stressed, "If the noble spirit of May 18 is included in the preamble of the Constitution, it can be sublimated into a value that all citizens learn and remember."
Jeong Muchang, Chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council, said, "I thank the chairpersons of the 17 provincial councils who united their will at this extraordinary meeting," and urged, "With both ruling and opposition parties in agreement and consensus, the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and the newly inaugurated 22nd National Assembly on May 30 must promptly pursue constitutional amendment."
