Poet Shin Kyung-rim, Author of 'Nongmu' and 'Poor Love Song,' Passes Away at 88 (Comprehensive)
Poet Shin Kyung-rim (88), who wrote poetry collections such as "Nongmu" and "Gananhan Sarangnorae," passed away on the 22nd.
According to literary circle officials, he had been battling cancer and died around 8:17 a.m. at the National Cancer Center in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province.
He was born in 1936 in Chungju, Chungbuk, and graduated from Chungju High School and the Department of English Literature at Dongguk University. While attending Dongguk University in 1956, his works such as "Galdae" and "Myobi" were recommended in the magazine "Munhak Yesul," marking the beginning of his literary career. In 1973, he published his first poetry collection "Nongmu," which expressed the sorrows and struggles of farmers. "Nongmu" was expanded and republished in 1975 as the first volume of the Changbi Poetry Series.
He later published poetry collections including "Saejae" (1979), "Dal Neomse" (1985), "Minyo Gihaeng 1" (1985), "Namhangang" (1987), "Gananhan Sarangnorae" (1988), "Minyo Gihaeng 2" (1989), "Gil" (1990), "Galdae" (1996), "Eomeoni wa Halmeoni ui Siluet" (1999), "Nakta" (2008), and "Sajingwanjip Icheung" (2014). He also published critical and theoretical works such as "Understanding Modern Korean Poetry" (1981), "The Truth of Life and Poetic Truth" (1983), and "Understanding Our Poetry" (1986).
He received the 1st Manhae Literary Award in 1974, the 8th Korean Literary Writers Award in 1981, and the 2nd Isan Literary Award in 1990. He served as president of the Association of Korean Writers for National Literature and co-chairman of the Federation of Korean Artists, and was a distinguished professor at Dongguk University.
The funeral will be held at the Seoul National University Hospital funeral hall. It is reported that the funeral will be conducted as a national literary funeral with major literary organizations participating.
