LG Electronics CTO Kim Byung-hoon awarded the 'Gold Tower Industrial Medal' on the 59th Inventors' Day

Kim Byung-hoon, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Electronics, received the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit at the 59th Invention Day event held on the 21st at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul. This award is the highest honor among government awards given for contributions to national industrial development.

View original imageSince joining LG Electronics in 2008, CTO Kim has led various research and development (R&D) efforts related to future advanced technologies. Since taking on the role of CTO in 2021, he has been leading the CTO division.
LG Electronics explained, "This award is highly meaningful as it recognizes the contributions made by the company’s CTO in leading the development of next-generation technology standards and securing related patents, thereby enhancing national technological competitiveness through world-class R&D innovation."
The patent competitiveness secured by LG Electronics continues through ongoing innovation and global market leadership. The company continues to introduce innovative products and services through its home appliance business. In the TV business, it is enhancing technological leadership with its premium OLED TV product line.
In the future growth sector of automotive parts, LG Electronics has achieved the world’s number one market share in the telematics field, which involves vehicle communication modules. It has also introduced innovative solutions such as the world’s first augmented reality (AR)-based head-up display (HUD) and future mobility digital cockpit.
Furthermore, the world-class standard patent competitiveness secured in key technology areas such as telecommunications, broadcasting, and codecs continues to generate steady patent royalty income in the global market. LG Electronics stated, "It also contributes to improving the country’s intellectual property competitiveness and technology trade balance."
LG Electronics’ patent competitiveness in future technology fields is also at a high level. A major example is leading global technology standardization by proposing the world’s first standardization concept in the ‘C-V2X (Cellular-Vehicle to Everything)’ field, which applies autonomous driving technology utilizing vehicle-to-everything communication.

Meanwhile, CTO Kim’s achievements as an inventor were highly recognized through this award. He has invented various communication standard technologies and filed over 3,000 patents domestically and internationally. Additionally, he was selected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an honor given to only the top 0.1% of experts.
