A woman in her 40s who pretended to be in a relationship with men she met on dating apps and extorted hundreds of millions of won was sentenced to prison.
According to Yonhap News on the 13th, "Judge Choi Hee-dong of the Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 6 sentenced Ms. A, who was tried on fraud charges, to three years in prison." According to Yonhap News, Ms. A was indicted on charges of extorting a total of about 670 million won from three male victims in their 30s, 40s, and 50s from September 2018 to October last year.
Ms. A approached men through dating apps while pretending to be an art-related entrepreneur and borrowed money under the pretense of "my funds are tied up, so I currently have no money for materials or employee meals. I will settle the costs by the end of the month," then kept the money.
Ms. A also met with men as if they were lovers and extorted money by saying, "I borrowed money from my previous boyfriend, and if I don't repay it, I don't think he will break up with me. I want to repay quickly and continue our relationship." To deceive the men, Ms. A played two roles herself, fabricating text messages that appeared to be from her actual previous boyfriend regarding financial matters.
The court stated the sentencing reason: "She committed the crime again during the probation period after serving a prison sentence for the same type of crime and was not forgiven by the victims."

Police investigations confirmed that Ms. A dated seven men and extorted a total of 3 billion won. Ms. A also carried out fraudulent acts while dating five men simultaneously. She first gained the victims' trust by giving luxury watches and golf clubs as gifts and traveling abroad together before committing the crimes. It is also known that one victim gave Ms. A more than 1.1 billion won.
