Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has invited ‘Na Eung-sik, a veterinarian specializing in companion cats,’ as the first lecturer for a special lecture on companion cats.
According to the '2022 National Awareness Survey on Animal Protection' released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, while the number of companion dogs in Korea increased by 18% from 4.61 million in 2010 to 5.44 million in 2022, the number of companion cats surged by 303%, from 630,000 to 2.54 million during the same period.
The district prepared this lecture in line with the growing social interest in companion cats due to the increase in single-person households, the entry into a super-aged society, and changes in pet preferences. The aim is to establish a proper companion animal culture and to address the questions of companion cat families.
The lecturer is veterinarian Na Eung-sik, a companion cat expert nicknamed ‘Nyaongshin.’ Na Eung-sik, the chief director of Grace Animal Hospital, is a cat behavior expert who runs the YouTube channel 'NyangshinTV.'
The lecture will explore what healthy living habits with cats are in the context of the rapidly increasing cat-owning population and discuss ways for owners and cats to live more happily together.
It will cover the origin of cats, various cat body languages, vocal languages, behavioral characteristics, and care information. There will also be a Q&A session to address questions such as cat behavioral problems and challenges in multi-cat households. The lecture will last 90 minutes.
The lecture is free, and residents who wish to participate can register online starting May 8 on the district office website or register on-site from 2 p.m. on the day of the event. Online registration is limited to 100 people, and on-site registration is limited to the first 80 people. Seating is free seating without assigned seats.
Meanwhile, the district holds a care shelter in the main auditorium on the second floor of the district office during the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays for households with companion dogs who leave their homes. Under the name ‘Companion Family Shelter,’ it also operates a pet playground and promotes various companion animal policies. In autumn, the district plans to hold the 7th ‘Companion Animal Culture Festival’ this year to foster awareness of coexistence such as animal protection and respect for life and to strive for the establishment of a proper companion culture.
Oh Seung-rok, mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Following last year’s special lecture on companion dogs, this year we prepared a special lecture on companion cats in response to the growing social interest. As families living with companion animals rapidly increase, we will strive to establish an advanced companion animal culture and implement various policies.”
