Miryang Yeongnamru, Promoted to National Treasure, Celebrated with Cheoyongmu and Bukchum Dance
Immijin Sorikkun Milyang Arirang Performance and More Presented
The Cultural Heritage Administration and Miryang City will hold a ceremony on the afternoon of the 8th to commemorate the promotion of 'Miryang Yeongnamnu' to a National Treasure. Yeongnamnu is a large pavilion with outstanding sculptural beauty and scenic value. It was designated as a Treasure in 1963 and has been managed as such until last December, when it was promoted to a National Treasure along with 'Samcheok Jukseoru.'
The ceremony will feature a performance of Miryang Arirang by Minjin Lee, a sorikkun (traditional Korean singer) from Miryang, as well as Cheoyongmu (a dance to drive away evil spirits and pray for good fortune), and Gomu (drum dance). Intangible cultural heritage groups such as the Miryang Baekjungnori Preservation Society will perform a Daedongnori (community play) with drums, gongs, and janggu (hourglass-shaped drums) to promote harmony.
