Daejeon Police Crack Down on 44 Election Offenders in General Election... 35 More Than the 21st
6 People Damaging Banners and Posters, 6 Mobilizing Illegal Groups, 5 Accepting Bribes
Considering Statute of Limitations, Intensive Investigation Agency Operated for 4 Months
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it has cracked down on 28 election-related criminal cases involving 44 individuals in connection with the 22nd National Assembly elections, referring 2 people to prosecution, deciding not to prosecute 5, and currently investigating 37.
This represents an increase of 35 individuals compared to 9 during the 21st National Assembly elections. The police analyzed that the increase in the number of election crime crackdowns by the police is due to the amendment of the Prosecutors' Office Act, which limited the scope of investigation initiation by prosecutors, resulting in more police investigations of election crimes that were previously directly investigated by the prosecution.
By type of crime, the numbers were as follows: △ Banner and poster damage 6 people (13.6%) △ Illegal group mobilization 6 people (13.6%) △ Bribery 5 people (11.4%) △ Dissemination of false information 4 people (9.1%) △ Election violence 4 people (9.1%) △ Distribution of illegal printed materials 3 people (6.8%). Illegal group mobilization and bribery cases doubled compared to the last general election, showing the largest increase among election crimes.
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency plans to operate an intensive investigation period for four months, focusing investigative resources, considering that the statute of limitations for election crimes is short at six months.
