Guidance on Daily Exercises Including Health Gymnastics, Health Clapping, and Upper/Lower Limb Strengthening Exercises
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has launched the 'Our Neighborhood Exercise Coach' project to support the healthy lives of senior citizens.
The initiative aims to stimulate interest in exercise among seniors experiencing declining physical functions, helping them incorporate exercise into their daily routines.
To this end, the district recruited 36 'Our Neighborhood Exercise Coaches' last January and provided training on exercise guidance methods for fall prevention and muscle strengthening, as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, through health center exercise specialists and external professional instructors.
The program consists of various physical activities that seniors can easily and enjoyably participate in. It begins with health gymnastics and warm-up exercises to prevent injuries, followed by upper and lower limb muscle strengthening exercises and coordination enhancement exercises to prevent falls.
For upper limb muscle strengthening, the program teaches movements known as 'Jam Jam' and arm extension and bending exercises using elastic bands. For lower limb muscle strengthening, light squats and stretching using chairs are instructed. These exercises are designed to prevent falls and minimize injuries, consisting of safe and easy-to-perform activities in daily life.
'Our Neighborhood Exercise Coach' will be dispatched to senior centers starting April 3 and will operate until October 22. Two to three coaches will be assigned per senior center, providing exercise guidance during four visits.
Additionally, the district operates programs such as 'Nowonirang Heart-Thumping GYM,' a moderate-to-high intensity physical activity program, the Nowon Healing Walking program centered on seniors' living areas, on-site guidance on how to use exercise equipment installed in parks by experts, as well as community sports classes and night gymnastics classes. Detailed information can be found on the district office website.
