15 Additional 'Seoripul Wondumak' Sunshade Shelters Installed to Block Sunlight
Seocho-gu Begins Operation of 242 Large Shade Structures 'Seoripul Wondumak' from April 1, Plans to Add 15 More Locations This Year... Conducts Thorough 4-Day Safety Inspections Before Operation to Ensure Resident Safety and Check for Malfunctions
Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) began operating 242 large sunshades called ‘Seoripul Wondumak’ from April 1, and plans to install 15 additional locations this year.
Seoripul Wondumak is a fixed sunshade first introduced nationwide in 2015, measuring an average width of 5m and height of 3.5m, creating a large shaded area to block the sun. Seoripul Wondumak is a lifestyle-oriented administrative innovation born from small but delicate ideas, and has now become an essential facility for summer heatwave prevention commonly seen throughout the country.
Currently, a total of 242 Seoripul Wondumak units are in operation, with 217 installed at crosswalks and traffic islands, 15 along Yangjaecheon Stream, Banpocheon Stream, and parks, and 10 at other cultural facilities and community centers.
This year, 15 new locations are planned for installation.
Seocho-gu conducted thorough safety inspections of the facilities for four days before operation to ensure resident safety, checking for any operational abnormalities and taking every precaution.
Seoripul Wondumak has become the national standard for sunshade installations across Korea, serving as the basis for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s ‘Guidelines for Installation and Management of Sunshades for Heatwave Prevention.’ It has also received numerous awards from domestic and international organizations.
It won the ‘Seoul Creative Award’ in 2017, the ‘Presidential Award’ in the local government category of the 2019 Korea Design Awards, and the ‘Gold Medal’ for excellent innovation cases at the Government Innovation 1st Street hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2020. Internationally, it was recognized for excellence by receiving the ‘Green Apple Awards,’ Europe’s top environmental award, in 2017, and the ‘Green World Awards’ in 2018. In 2020, it was donated to the sister city Cuauht?moc in Mexico City and installed in a local park.
Last year, it was the only institution in the Seoul area to receive the highest and first government innovation certification from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Seocho-gu is striving to promote creative and innovative administration by utilizing Seoripul Wondumak beyond just a simple sunshade. Last year, it held the ‘Visiting Flower Seat Concert’ by using the Seoripul Wondumak in front of the Yangjaecheon waterfront stage as a performance venue during peak pedestrian hours. In winter, four large beautiful tree-shaped installations were set up, among other initiatives.
