West Sea Coast Guard Agency Holds Roundtable Meeting with Coastal Cargo Shipping Companies
Sharing Awareness on the Need to Strengthen Seafarer Training... Proactive Accident Prevention
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency (Commissioner Kim In-chang) will hold a total of four roundtable meetings with 31 coastal cargo shipping companies, starting with Wando Coast Guard on the 26th and continuing until Yeosu Coast Guard on the 4th of next month, to proactively prevent maritime accidents.
According to the West Sea Coast Guard Agency, there have been 133 nationwide cargo ship collisions, groundings, and strandings over the past three years, of which 127 cases, accounting for 95%, were caused by operational negligence such as lack of vigilance.
In particular, many accidents occurred during the vulnerable hours of drowsy navigation at night and dawn while operating in autopilot mode without taking appropriate evasive actions. At the roundtable meetings, they will share measures to reduce accidents caused by human error with coastal cargo shipping companies and request cooperation in strengthening crew training.
