US House Speaker Faces Another Ouster Threat... Internal Party Conflict Escalates Over Ukraine Support
Republicans Introduce Resolution to Remove Chairman Johnson
Mike Johnson, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, faces the threat of removal by hardline Republicans after passing this year's $1.2 trillion (approximately 1,620 trillion KRW) budget. Republican figures have raised their voices against the passage of the Ukraine aid budget, which was excluded from this bill, mentioning the dismissal of Speaker Johnson.
On the 24th (local time), Chip Roy, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, appeared on CNN and stated, "If we put the Ukraine aid bill on the floor without securing the border, I promise there will be problems inside the Capitol."
He emphasized, "I think Speaker Johnson made a mistake," and "I don't believe this bill reflects what the American people want."
Speaker Johnson passed the $1.2 trillion budget for the 2024 fiscal year (October 2023 to September 2024) just past midnight on the 22nd, two hours after the U.S. government entered a shutdown. The Senate processed the budget the following day on the 23rd, and President Joe Biden signed it on the same day. Thus, the discussion on this year's government budget, which began last October, was finalized after about half a year.
However, the security budget to support Ukraine, Israel, and others was not processed. The White House and the Democratic Party urged the passage of the Ukraine aid budget, but the Republican majority in the House, which is negative about supporting Ukraine, had not cooperated with the budget process, demanding an increase in border control funding. Accordingly, conflicts are expected to intensify not only between the Democratic and Republican parties but also within the Republican Party over the future passage of the Ukraine aid budget.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia, already introduced a resolution to remove Speaker Johnson on the 22nd. This is the second attempt by the Republican Party to remove a Speaker from their own party, following the historic removal of then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy in September last year.

The Democratic Party plans to decide their stance on the removal after hearing Speaker Johnson's position on Ukraine aid. It is reported that if Speaker Johnson actively processes the security package budget totaling $95 billion (approximately 128 trillion KRW), including $60 billion (approximately 81 trillion KRW) for Ukraine aid, the Democrats will not join the Republican attempt to remove him.
