Protests Surge as Prices Double at Famous US Restaurant... Owner Says "Nothing Hasn't Increased"
Burrito That Was $11 Now $22 After 2 Years
"Rising Food and Labor Costs... Nothing Hasn't Increased"
A restaurant in the United States has doubled the price of its burritos in two years, sparking controversy online. The restaurant owner stated that the price increase was unavoidable due to rising ingredient costs.
Local media, including CBS in the U.S., reported that the menu prices at a restaurant in San Francisco's Mission District have sharply increased, causing controversy.
The restaurant in question is a Mexican restaurant called 'La Vaca Birria.' One customer wrote a review pointing out that the burrito price had doubled to $22 (about 30,000 KRW) in two years. Other customers also responded with comments such as "It's still a delicious burrito, but at this price, there are many better food options," and "It was $11 two years ago."
In response to the controversy, the restaurant owner Ricardo Lopez explained how much the costs of ingredients and other expenses have risen over the past two years. He said, "The price of beef has increased by more than $2 per pound, so I have to pay an additional $6,000 (about 8 million KRW) every month," and added, "Also, due to rising labor costs, I have to pay an extra $3,000 (about 4 million KRW) per month."
He lamented that everything from oil to onions and limes has become more expensive compared to two years ago. Lopez said, "The price of everything has gone up. Since COVID-19, there hasn't been a single thing that hasn't increased in price." He also stated, "Many restaurants are currently struggling financially, and the price increase was not to accumulate extra cash but simply to make a living."
