Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will operate the 'Spring Cleaning Day' with the slogan "A Clean Neighborhood, the Face of Nowon!" involving about 2,000 participants.
With early spring flower news arriving due to climate change, the district plans to conduct the 'Spring Cleaning with Residents' starting in March. This is to welcome visitors to local mountains and healing spots and to support residents' comfortable daily lives.
On March 14, designated as Spring Cleaning Day, the ‘Sseudam Movement’ will be carried out to establish a culture of voluntary cleaning among residents. The Sseudam Movement, familiar as ‘plogging,’ is a campaign where participants jog while picking up trash to protect both health and the environment. The district plans to promote the Sseudam Movement year-round, encouraging residents to voluntarily participate and build a shared culture as clean city citizens of Nowon.
Families and clubs who pre-register can participate, and cleaning tools and garbage bags needed for the activity will be provided by the community centers. Residents wishing to participate can apply by visiting their local community center or the Resource Circulation Division, or by phone.
In response to climate change, the cleaning administration plan was also advanced. The 'Cleaning Week,' previously held in the fourth week of March every year, will be moved to the second week to intensively clean accumulated trash over winter from major roads, back alleys, hiking trails, walking paths, green spaces, and public facilities in the area.
On major arterial roads such as Dongil-ro (8.27 km), Nohae-ro (1.11 km), and Sanggye-ro (3.21 km), four dust suction vehicles, six water spraying trucks, and three street cleaning vehicles will be deployed to remove fine dust caused by vehicle exhaust. Additionally, under the elevated subway sections at Nowon Station and Sanggye Station, three water spraying trucks each will be used to thoroughly clean pigeon droppings and other debris.
For major side roads and alleys frequently used by residents, local residents familiar with the neighborhood, including the ‘Senior Clean Keeper Group,’ will participate to maintain cleaning in vulnerable areas by district. Areas that are usually hard to reach for cleaning, such as green belts, hiking and walking trails, and neighborhood parks, will also have cigarette butts and other trash collected, and aging tree facilities will be maintained.
The district was recognized for its systematic cleaning administration by achieving ‘Best’ in the 2021 Seoul City Urban Cleanliness Evaluation and ‘Excellent’ in the 2022 evaluation, earning good results for two consecutive years.
