On the 27th at World Cup Village, Gijang-gun, Busan
16 Youth Teams Participate, Scholarship Awards Presented
A youth soccer tournament honoring legendary national team defender from Busan, ‘Jeong Yong-hwan,’ will be held.
On the 27th at 10 a.m., the 8th Jeong Yong-hwan Cup Dream Tree Soccer Tournament and Scholarship Award Ceremony will take place at World Cup Village in Ilgwang-myeon, Gijang-gun, Busan.
In this tournament honoring former coach Jeong Yong-hwan, 16 youth soccer teams from the Busan area are expected to compete in skills.
The scholarship foundation was established in 2015 after former coach Jeong passed away from cancer, carrying on his will and fostering young soccer talents by holding annual soccer tournaments and scholarship award events.
The foundation consists of about 200 members, including Chinese restaurant owners and self-employed businesspeople in the Busan area, and has been organizing the tournament by raising funds through membership fees contributed bit by bit and one-day beer festivals.
BNK Busan Bank, Korea Asset Management Corporation (KAMCO), and Busan Metropolitan Office of Education are sponsoring the event in support of its purpose.
During the tournament, a Ground Jajangmyeon Party, prepared and served directly by representatives of Chinese restaurants, will be held on one side of the field to delight the taste buds of participating players and attendees.
Former coach Jeong Yong-hwan, a native of Chilam, Gijang, graduated from Busanjin Middle School, Dongnae High School, and Korea University, and after representing the youth national team, he made a name for himself as an unwavering defender of the national team for 11 years from 1983 to 1994.
He led the team as captain in the 1990 Italy World Cup. Also, as a founding member of Daewoo Royals, the predecessor of the current Busan IPark professional soccer team, he played in 168 K League matches and built a golden record of winning the regular league three times.
He set a great record of 100 appearances in international competitions as a national team player and retired in 1994. Afterward, he devoted himself to the development of youth soccer until he passed away in June 2015.
Song Chun-yeol, chairman of the Jeong Yong-hwan Scholarship Foundation, said, “This is the only soccer tournament created by a pure fan club, and the dream Jeong Yong-hwan envisioned during his lifetime is talked about among members and soccer fans, leading to the tournament’s growth every year.”
