Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) recently carried out a public art installation project as part of a mural maintenance initiative in the area.
The district launched the project to create an urban environment that enhances the quality of life for residents by removing and repairing deteriorated murals identified through a comprehensive survey conducted last year.
The project prioritized murals in urgent need of repair. The targeted sites this time were ▲246 Seobinggo-ro (former district-owned land) and ▲88 Hyochangwon-ro 13-gil (city-owned land).
Notably, “246 Seobinggo-ro” involved singer and artist Koo Jun-yeop as the design artist. The actual mural installation was carried out in collaboration with a professional public art company.
Koo Jun-yeop, who participated in the design, said, “The concept is the four seasons of Yongsan-gu, the dynamic heart of Seoul,” adding, “We created a public art piece that offers diverse changes and sparks imagination among the public.”
A district official added, “Thanks to the newly created mural in an area perceived negatively as a waste disposal site, the street has transformed into a brighter and safer-feeling place.”
Since last year, the district has been maintaining aging public art works and installing eye-catching pieces that instill pride in the community as residents pass by.
Along with this mural, the mural on the school route of Seoul Wonhyo Elementary School located in Wonhyo-ro 2-dong was completely reconstructed.
“88 Hyochangwon-ro 13-gil” is a retaining wall of Wonhyo Elementary School, and the design was decided in consultation with the school. Bright and vivid colors were used to reflect the characteristics of the elementary school route, and a design indicating a children protection zone was applied.
