Joo Kyu-il, Mayor of Jinju City, is holding a progress review meeting on the relocation and construction of the National Jinju Museum.
View original imageThe relocation and construction of the National Jinju Museum began in June 2019 with a business agreement between Jinju City and the National Museum of Korea to move the National Jinju Museum, currently located within Jinju Fortress, to the old Jinju Station railway site. After an international design competition in July last year, design services have been carried out since October by Beom Architecture Comprehensive Architects Office and two other firms.
The 'Old Jinju Station Railway Site Regeneration Project' is being promoted in the area of the old Jinju Station railway site in Cheonjeon-dong, Jinju City. This project aims to transform the idle urban land, which had been neglected, into a regional cultural hub through the relocation and construction of the National Jinju Museum, the creation of a railway culture park, development of a cultural street, establishment of a public specialized science museum, and the creation of a citizen plaza and forest. Among these, the relocation and construction of the National Jinju Museum is the core project.
The relocation and construction of the National Jinju Museum is being carried out with a total project cost of 85.5 billion KRW, on a site area of 20,079㎡ and a total floor area of 14,780㎡, consisting of three above-ground floors and one basement floor. The design is currently underway with the goal of creating a complex cultural space that aligns with recent museum trends and a low-threshold museum that integrates with the daily lives of Jinju citizens. Construction is scheduled to be commissioned in 2025 and completed by 2027.
Mayor Jo Gyu-il stated, "Until now, the National Jinju Museum has been wearing a garment too small for its role, and spatially it has felt insufficient to fully perform its functions." He added, "I hope that the newly constructed museum will be introduced as a representative regional museum of South Korea."
