KOSPI Extends Intraday Decline Amid Foreigners' Net Selling
The KOSPI index is extending its intraday decline, pressured by net selling from foreign investors.
As of 9:46 a.m. on the 20th, the KOSPI index is trading at 2,663.11, down 16.98 points (0.63%) from the previous day.
By investor type, institutions and individuals are net buyers of 3.9 billion KRW and 11.4 billion KRW respectively, while foreigners are net sellers of 27.9 billion KRW. In the futures market, foreigners and individuals are net sellers of 6.3 billion KRW and 33.7 billion KRW respectively, whereas institutions are net buyers of 25.3 billion KRW.
The New York Stock Exchange was closed the previous day for Presidents' Day. The KOSPI index started slightly lower due to profit-taking from recent strength in low price-to-book ratio (PBR) stocks. Subsequently, the net selling pressure from foreign investors intensified, widening the decline.
More sectors are falling than rising. The insurance sector dropped 2.2%, electricity and gas -1.71%, steel and metals -1.32%, textiles and apparel -1.23%, construction -1.11%, finance -1.18%, chemicals -1.06%, and securities -0.97%. On the other hand, paper and wood rose 0.82%, medical precision 0.09%, and pharmaceuticals 0.12%.
Most of the top market capitalization stocks are weak. Samsung Electronics fell 0.54%, SK Hynix -0.86%, LG Energy Solution -0.63%, Hyundai Motor -1.98%, Kia -0.85%, Celltrion -0.66%, POSCO Holdings -2.02%, and LG Chem -2.07%. Meanwhile, Samsung Biologics rose 0.24% and NAVER increased 0.49%.
The KOSDAQ index rebounded after an initial decline. At the same time, the KOSDAQ index is trading at 861.24, up 2.77 points (0.32%) from the previous day.
By investor type, institutions and foreigners are net sellers of 46.8 billion KRW and 41.1 billion KRW respectively, while individuals are net buyers of 97.5 billion KRW, supporting the rise.
Most of the top market capitalization stocks are strong. Ecopro BM is up 0.82%, HLB 1.52%, Enchem 6.97%, HPSP 0.89%, Rainbow Robotics 1.73%, Shinseong Delta Tech 4.82%, and Hugel 6.41%. Conversely, Ecopro is down 1.32%, Alteogen -0.11%, and Rino Industrial -1.2%.

Meanwhile, at the same time in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate is trading at 1,338.9 won, up 3.7 won from the previous day.
