Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will create a 'Taegukgi Street' around Hyochang Park from the 24th of this month to the 3rd of next month to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the March 1st Movement.
By establishing the 'Taegukgi Street' in front of Hyochang Park, a sacred site of the independence movement, the district aims to allow residents to feel the spirit of the independence movement in their daily lives.
Accordingly, the district plans to install Taegukgi flags like flower petals on streetlights and trees along the 710-meter section from Hyochang Park Station on Subway Line 6 to Hyochang Park.
*Installation period: 2024.2.22. (Thu) ~ 2.23. (Fri)
Twenty bare street trees in front of the main gate of Hyochang Park (when the gate opens), where new buds have not sprouted, will be densely decorated with Taegukgi flags, and Taegukgi flags will be hoisted as horizontal flags on streetlights along the road leading into the park.
Last year, many posts related to the 'Taegukgi Street' set up in Hyochang Park were uploaded on social networking services (SNS) and online communities, becoming a hot topic online.
Netizens shared photos of the 'Taegukgi flower trees' with comments such as, "I thought the cherry blossoms had bloomed and ran over happily, but it was the Taegukgi," "Taegukgi flowers have bloomed in front of Hyochang Park," "It’s an even more wonderful sight because Hyochang Park is the burial site of independence patriots," and "From afar, it really looks like cherry blossoms, and up close, it’s even prettier than cherry blossoms."
Hyochang Park is a nationally designated cultural heritage site (Historic Site No. 330) where patriotic martyrs who shed blood and sweat for the country’s independence rest. Within the park are the graves of seven patriots, including Baekbeom Kim Gu, the Three Martyrs (Lee Bong-chang, Yun Bong-gil, Baek Jeong-gi), and key figures of the Provisional Government (Lee Dong-nyeong, Cha Ri-seok, Jo Seong-hwan).
Additionally, to mark the March 1st Movement Day, the district plans to hoist about 3,200 Taegukgi flags along 36.5 km of major roads in the area, including Noksapyeong-daero, Hangang-daero, and Baekbeom-ro.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "The peace we tread on today is the wish exchanged for the blood and sweat of the independence patriots," adding, "I hope the Taegukgi Street we are creating this time will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the historical value of the March 1st Movement, which fiercely fought for the country’s independence."
