Declining Popularity of Gyodae... Regular Admission Competition Rate Increased but 13% No-Show Rate
Average Grade 4 Level Also Confirmed as First-Time Passers
Additional Successful Candidates Expected to Have Even Lower Grades
In the 2024 academic year regular admission for college entrance, the competition rate for national education universities and general universities' elementary education departments increased, but there is an analysis that the acceptance cutoff scores themselves may decline.
Students and their families attending the '2024 CSAT Results and Regular Admission Score Prediction Briefing' held last year at Daeyang Hall, Sejong University, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, are listening attentively to the explanation.
View original imageOn the 19th, Jongno Academy reported that among the eight national education universities nationwide that disclosed the registration status of initial successful candidates for the 2024 regular admission, the number of no-shows was 233 (13.1%), slightly down from the previous year (243 people, 15.9%). By school, the no-show rate among initial successful candidates was relatively high at Gwangju Gyodae with 25.7%, Chuncheon Gyodae with 19.7%, and Gyeongin Gyodae with 17.4%, while Seoul Gyodae was 12.0%. Among general universities' elementary education departments, Jeju University had 19.6% and Ewha Womans University had 6.3%.
Earlier, the nationwide regular admission competition rate for education universities in 2024 recorded 3.15 to 1, unusually higher than last year's 1.87 to 1. This is interpreted as being due to an increase in the number of regular admission slots caused by many no-shows among early admission successful candidates, which led to expectations of a decline in cutoff scores. However, despite the high competition rate in regular admissions, it is expected that many students who are accepted to both education universities and general universities will enroll in general universities, so the cutoff scores for education universities' regular admissions are estimated not to be high.

Jongno Academy stated, "There are cases of initial acceptance in some education universities' regular admissions with an average grade of 4 in Korean, Math, and Science," and added, "It is expected that many additional successful candidates will have even lower scores." They continued, "Although the competition rate for regular admissions has risen unusually, the cutoff scores are unlikely to increase and may even decline depending on the situation," and explained, "It is difficult to interpret this year's rise in regular admission competition rates as an increase in preference for education universities."
