Hosted by the National Honam Biological Resources Center... Expectations Rise for Full-Scale Development of Island Wildlife Information

National Pukyong University (President Jang Young-su) and Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST, President Lee Geon-woo) are participating as joint research and development institutions in the second sub-project of the “Multi-Ministry National Biological Research Resources Advancement Project” led by the National Honam Biological Resources Center (Director Ryu Tae-cheol) under the Ministry of Environment.

Supported by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute under the Ministry of Environment, this project aims to secure island wildlife materials and useful information through multi-ministry cooperation including the Ministry of Science and ICT, and to discover academic and industrial value through functional research.

Among the projects, the National Honam Biological Resources Center, which leads the second sub-project “Materialization of Natural Products (Indicator/Functional Components) Derived from Island Wildlife,” has formed the Island Wildlife Material Advancement Research Group (Head Choi Kyung-min) since last year and is promoting the project until 2026. From January this year, National Pukyong University and DGIST have additionally joined.

With the participation of these two institutions, the research group expects to achieve synergy effects in securing materials and producing useful information for the second sub-project by collaborating with existing joint research and development institutions such as National Mokpo University (securing island wildlife materials) and Jeju Technopark Biodiversity Research Institute (ethanol extracts, fractions, etc.).

Following the addition of joint research and development institutions, National Pukyong University, led by Professor Ryu Bo-mi (majoring in Food and Nutrition), plans to produce extracts (ethanol extracts, fractions, etc.) from secured materials and isolate single substances of indicator and functional components. DGIST, led by Director Choi Sung-kyun of the Core Protein Resource Center, plans to conduct core information production through component analysis and functional research (such as anticancer studies).

Choi Kyung-min, head of the Island Wildlife Material Advancement Research Group, said, “With the participation of these two institutions this year, we expect quantitative and qualitative improvements in research results, help in discovering new projects, and active research that can drive the bioindustry using island wildlife materials.”
